The Winter's Tale
31.5” x 23.5” (80 x 60 cm) / Oil on gessoed panel / £7500
Was it February 2018 when the ice storm came? It gripped our postcode on a Wednesday and stayed for ten days or more. The ‘Beast from the East’ the press called it. I haven’t felt so frozen since I last got the cold shoulder from the RA Summer Exhibition. My objective in the painting was to try to capture the cold. The nickname, ‘The Beast’, hung around in the media. A more accurate title from my standpoint would have been, ‘The View from the Loo’, for that’s the scene I painted. The title I settled on eventually was, ‘The Winter’s Tale’. A tad more poetic with an added touch of - as they say in the ad world - quality by association.
