'Paintings are furniture masquerading as art.'
That’s what my mentor used to say. He was a great believer in the craft of painting, and letting the 'art take care of itself'. ‘Someone might,’ he’d say, ‘hang your masterpiece on a nail above their fireplace. The very least you can do is to build the work to last, just as if you were a carpenter or cabinet maker, working on a fine table or chair.’
I was born in London, England and educated at Sloane School, Chelsea. I’m self-taught and work in a realist style. My early work often showed old buildings and industrial architecture. This was because I worked outdoors, often on canal banks or railway cuttings. Later, when I moved to the country, things became more bucolic. My Gallery section shows work from both periods.
I work with acrylics, oils, watercolour and graphite on board and paper. I’ve exhibited in galleries throughout Britain, and also in America. I regularly submit to The Royal Academy as well as other London venues including The Royal Society of British Artists, The Mall Galleries, The Royal Festival Hall, and The London Stock Exchange. Paintings are in private collections in America, Australia, Britain, France and Sweden and prints have been sold worldwide.
A point to note. The painting of the bearded gentleman above is not a self-portrait. It is a copy of a masterpiece by van Dyck that hangs in the Rockox House Museum, Antwerp. The title of the van Dyck work is, Studies of a Man’s Head. It shows a head in two positions. I painted only one. That was hard enough.
