THE TREASURE OF BRITWELL SALOME - VESPERS
31.5” x 23.5” (80 x 60cm) / Oil on gessoed panel /£7500
This work is a companion piece to an earlier painting, The Treasure of Britwell Salome - Matins. The paintings are views of a disused granary building in South Oxfordshire. One side gets the morning sun hence ‘Matins’ - I could hear the nearby church bells as I worked on site - the other side gets the sunset, hence 'Vespers'. The building is hidden from the road, shielded by trees and hedgerows. I’d passed it many times and not noticed it. A friend called it to my attention, especially the ‘fancy corbelling’ of the brick work. I would like the paintings to be kept together and exhibited as a pair, perhaps within an organisation with a heritage, historic or educational interest in Oxfordshire agricultural architecture. (Advice and suggestions would be welcomed here.) Matins was accepted by The Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) for exhibition at their Annual Show, 2020. The RBA is dedicated to promoting the highest standards of skill, concept and draughtsmanship in painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing.
